It’s nearly that time of year again: Summertime! While that means that kids will be getting out of school and having fun, it also means that huge energy bills could be just around the corner. The summers here can be brutal to your budget. Here are a few suggestions for keeping your summer cooling bills low.
Take advantage of deals. Have you asked your energy company about ways to reduce your bill? Many companies are glad to give you deals. Ask about average billing, which costs a fixed amount each month, based on your past energy bills. You could also get a discounted rate, or take advantage of programs that tie your payments to the cost of (cheaper) natural gas.
Have your roof painted. This might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of cutting down on bills, but it can help save you money over time. Opt for white, or a very light color that will not absorb the sun’s heat.
Have your ductwork professionally cleaned. If your air conditioning unit is using extra power to try and push cold air through clogged ventilation, your bill will reflect the added energy consumption. Get your ventilation totally cleaned out, and your air filters changed.
Check for energy-efficient upgrades. When you have an HVAC professional come out, ask them about appliances and units with the Energy Star logo. The EPA has approved these items as being energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
